Are Super 8 Wedding Videos Worth It? A Guide for Couples Planning Their Wedding Film

As Super 8mm Wedding Videographers, the Super 8 film format is something we’re often asked about by couples who are drawn to its nostalgic, cinematic feel, but aren’t quite sure what it actually is or how it works!!

This guide is here to give you a clear understanding of what Super 8mm is, how it works, and why so many couples choose to include it in their wedding. Whether you’re considering it for your own day or simply curious, we hope this helps you see whether it’s the right fit for your story.

What Is Super 8mm Film?

Super 8mm is a motion picture film format first introduced by Kodak in 1965. Long before smartphones and digital cameras existed, families used Super 8 cameras to document holidays, birthdays, weddings, and everyday life. For decades Super 8mm became the format of choice for documenting these moments. Many of the family films passed down through generations were originally shot on Super 8.

Unlike modern video, Super 8mm captures light onto a physical film stock. Every frame is a real image imprinted onto film, which is then developed and digitised.

Today, Super 8mm is loved for its nostalgic appearance, organic imperfections, and timeless quality. It creates films that feel less like recordings and more like memories!

While technology has evolved, the emotional connection people feel towards these films has never disappeared. If anything, it has become even more popular in recent years! We believe this is because there’s a growing desire for something more raw, organic, and less refined, and people are becoming tired of overly polished footage and recordings.

What Is The Difference Between Super 8mm And Digital Video?

Digital video is designed to be sharp, detailed, and technically accurate.

Super 8 is designed by its very nature to be imperfect.

The truth is that Super 8 doesn't just look different compared to digital formats, but it really does feel different too.

Digital captures events similar to how we perceive them.

Super 8 captures the essence.

There is an emotional quality that is difficult to replicate digitally, through its grainy texture, softness, the way it captures light, and even the movement of the shutter. Rather than feeling like you're watching a perfectly documented event, it often feels like you're looking through a window into the past.

Many couples tell us their Super 8 film reminds them of old family films they watched growing up. There's something about it that instantly feels familiar, nostalgic, and deeply human.

Super 8 is known for:

  • Beautiful grain

  • Soft imagery

  • Rich colours

  • Organic motion

  • Vintage character

  • Natural imperfections

It feels less polished than digital footage, but that's exactly why people love it, and it’s is why we love offering both. Together they create two completely different viewing experiences.

Why Is Super 8mm Popular For Weddings?

Weddings are full of moments that only grow more meaningful with time. Super 8 brings a timeless quality to those memories, and what we love most is how it connects generations! It often feels just as familiar and special to parents and grandparents as it does to the couple themselves. It becomes a beautiful way of continuing a family story through film.

The format naturally lends itself to the emotions on a wedding day, especially considering you’re surrounded by your closest people, and the way it captures the atmosphere so naturally too is a leading factor for couples choosing to include this vintage film format.

Rather than creating a perfect record of the day, it creates an impression of the experience. The result often feels romantic, family-orientated with a cinematic twist in a way that modern video simply cannot replicate.

Should I Hire A Super 8mm Wedding Videographer?

Super 8 is ideal for couples who:

  • Love old family films

  • Appreciate vintage cinema

  • Value real memories over posing/ staging moments

  • Want a timeless aesthetic

  • Feel drawn to nostalgia

If you're looking for something that feels unique, personal, and deeply connected to memory, Super 8 may be perfect for you!

However, not every couple needs Super 8!

Our storytelling films will always be the foundation of what we do because they preserve voices, stories, speeches, vows, and the emotional narrative of the day.

Super 8 is something different. It doesn't replace your wedding film. Instead, it complements it by giving you another way to relive your celebration.

Think of it as adding a beautiful heirloom alongside your main film.

What Moments Do You Film On Super 8mm?

We naturally gravitate towards moments that feel personal, emotional, and human.

Some of our favourite things to capture include:

  • Grandparents

  • Children running and playing

  • Couples together

  • Confetti moments

  • Family interactions

  • Small details

  • Destination experiences

  • Quiet in-between moments

  • Guests enjoying themselves

  • Hugs, laughter, and kisses

We especially love documenting the people who make your story what it is.

Destination Weddings Filmed On Real Super 8mm

The surrounding experiences that happen at destination weddings such as; welcome drinks, shared meals, local culture tours, boat trips and excursions, family gatherings, and many other moments all lend themselves beautifully.

We see our Super 8 films as elevated home-movies created by professionals, so capturing all these small moments that surround your wedding day fit so well with the style and approach we have when shooting this vintage format!

Does Super 8mm Video Have Audio?

Some Super 8 filmmakers have cameras that do record audio alongside their footage. Our cameras don’t have this function, and we also intentionally choose not to offer ambient audio on our Super 8….

Her’s the reason why: Our Super 8 films are designed to feel different from our storytelling films. Rather than focusing on dialogue, speeches, or ambient sounds, they focus on emotion, movement, atmosphere, and carefully chosen music.

This creates a viewing experience that encapsulates the vintage charm! In our opinion, our Super 8 films feel more like an impression of a memory rather than immersing you right back like our main digital storytelling film does! When you combine our wedding collections with our Super 8 add-on, you get the best of both worlds.

How Long Is A Super 8 Wedding Film?

Each roll of Super 8 film captures around 3 minutes and 20 seconds of footage when shot at 18 frames per second, which is the original frames per second on Super 8. For a wedding, we typically work with around 2 to 4 rolls of film.

This gives us a curated collection of moments across the day, which we then carefully edit into a 3 to 5 minute wedding film.

These films are all about feeling raw and unpolished, like a distilled memory of your day, shaped into a short cinematic piece rather than a long form video. (If you’re looking for a longer film of all the moments within your wedding from start to finish, that’s what our 20 minute extended film add-on is available for!)

Why Is Super 8mm So Expensive?

Unlike digital video, every second of Super 8 comes with a physical cost.

Super 8 is a completely different process to digital video. Instead of recording onto a memory card, every moment is exposed directly onto physical film stock, which is a light-sensitive material that is gradually used up as we shoot.

Once a roll is finished, it has to be sent to a specialist lab where it is chemically developed, scanned frame by frame, and converted into a digital file. Nothing about Super 8mm is instant like it is on digital!

The cameras themselves are also vintage equipment, whilst ours are in pristine condition, they are still from the 70s! They are mechanical, not digital, which means they require ongoing care, calibration, and testing to keep them performing as reliable as possible.

Each film has a physical cost attached to it, from the film stock itself, to shipping, development, scanning, and the handling of a material that can only be used once.

While their is a higher cost attached to create these films, our couples understand that the final result is so distinctive and artful.

The price includes:

  • Kodak Film stocks

  • Light-meter batteries

  • Film drive batteries

  • Protective packaging & shipping

  • Professional processing

  • Professional development

  • Professional scanning

  • Camera maintenance

  • Additional footage time

  • The use of the camera

  • Editing and colour work

  • Online delivery of the film

What Are The Advantages Of Super 8mm?

We see lot’s of advantages to having a wedding film made on these vintage cameras, and here are some of our favourites:

  • Beautiful nostalgic, unique and artistic aesthetic

  • It has a true timeless appearance, your wedding film can look like it was filmed in the 20th century - we love the vintage charm of it!

  • Emotional connection to memory - it stirs something up inside you when you watch your people back on this format

  • Perfect for destination weddings especially ones focused on family, friends and human connection!

  • Complements digital wedding film as it produces a completely different look

  • Creates a family heirloom film you’re going to cherish for a lifetime and that can be passed down for generations

What Are The Limitations Of Super 8mm?

Part of the beauty of Super 8 is that it is imperfect.

Because we shoot on vintage cameras and physical film, there is always an element of unpredictability.

Film can react differently to light, weather, and shooting conditions. This can be a limitation to Super 8 for those who like control and the crispness of digital. We personally see this as an advantage, because the light flares and added sprinkle of grain only add to it’s magic!

While we maintain our equipment carefully and take every precaution possible, Super 8 will never offer the same reliability as our modern digital cameras. This is one of the reasons we always capture the core moments of your wedding digitally first.

Another small limitation is that Super 8 can be a little bit loud! Because of the mechanical nature, they can make a noticeable whirring sound when recording. This sound is also part of the charm and nostalgia of the format in our opinion!! However, we always ask you prior to your wedding if you’re happy for us to use our super 8mm cameras in quieter moments such as ceremony and speeches, due to its noisy nature!

How Will I Receive My Super 8mm Wedding Film?

Your Super 8 film is delivered both online and on your USB alongside your wedding collection. This makes it easy to watch, share, and revisit whenever you wish!

What Should I Do With My Super 8mm Film Once I Receive It?

The beauty of Super 8 is that it often feels like the family films many of us grew up watching. It naturally invites people to gather around and reminisce together.

It can be as simple as watching it on your anniversary, or making it a moment with family by projecting it onto a wall or screen and reliving it together like a small viewing night at home. Some couples will share one day with future children, letting them see and feel the people and atmosphere that surrounded your story in the same way you maybe did with your family films.

Is Super 8mm Worth It?

We believe it absolutely is.

For couples who love cinema, family history, and the beauty of remembering, there is truly nothing quite like it!
