Destination Weddings in Barcelona & Catalonia: A Complete Guide for Couples Planning a Wedding in Spain

Destination Weddings in Barcelona: A Guide From Local Wedding Filmmakers

If you're planning a destination wedding in the Barcelona area, first of all, we think you're making a pretty great choice!! We're a little biased, of course…

We’re Eduard & Josey, a wedding videography team and couple based in Catalonia. Between us we speak English, Spanish & Catalan, working with couples from the US, Canada, UK, Europe & beyond who are planning destination weddings here. We spend a lot of our year filming weddings across Europe, but this part of Spain is where we've chosen to build our life together. Whilst we love filming weddings abroad, we do feel that the Catalonia region has something really special to offer!

When most people think of a Barcelona wedding, they picture the city. Maybe the Sagrada Família, busy streets and rooftop cocktails. But the wedding locations we love most actually happen to be outside the city. They're tucked away in vineyards, hidden in the hills, surrounded by olive trees, overlooking the Mediterranean or set within beautiful old Masias and private estates where guests can settle in for a few days and truly enjoy being together in a serene and private setting.

Weddings venues located in the quieter spaces of Barcelona create the perfect environment for people to slow down and be present throughout their wedding experience, whilst still having the opportunity to visit the city and explore the beauty that Barcelona has to offer.

What Is a Barcelona Destination Wedding Actually Like?

Destination weddings can feel completely different from traditional weddings. The structure of the wedding day itself may not necessarily be completely different, but more so the events that surrounds the wedding day. When couples choose a Barcelona destination wedding, they and their guests often arrive to the area a few days earlier, and everyone gets to experience the celebration together from the start. Families & friends get to meet each other or reconnect before the wedding, and the couple gets to enjoy that build-up with everyone they love in one place.

They can share meals together in the Barri Gòtic, explore beautiful local areas like Montserrat & the abundance of Mediterranean coves. Not to mention all the unique villages such as Rupit i Pruit & Sitges! In the city there’s many experiences available for everyone too, such as visiting the Sagrada Familia, La Rambla & Park Güell. Choosing a destination wedding means turning the whole wedding trip into a once-in-a-lifetime shared experience for both the couple and their family and friends.

The days adjacent to the wedding can be filled with more wedding specific events from welcome drinks in vineyards, family-style rehearsal dinners in olive groves overlooking the mountains and pool parties within private estates and villas. This keeps the wedding day as the main event but means it isn’t the only event. And that's what we love so much about destination weddings because you get to soak up all the moments and create memories that you will cherish for a lifetime.

Why We Think Barcelona Is One of the Best Places in Europe for a Destination Wedding

One of the things we love most about the Catalonia region is the variety of locations just a stones throw away! It’s one of the main reasons we absolutely love living here too.

Within an hour or two of Barcelona you can find:

  • Vineyards

  • Mountains

  • Mediterranean coastline

  • Historic castles

  • Luxury villas

  • Beautiful countryside estates

  • Traditional Catalan masias

It means couples don't have to choose between nature, luxury, accessibility and experience. You can literally have all of them on your doorstep! Many of our favourite venues don't feel like venues at all. They feel more like places you get to live in for a few days with your favourite people. In our opinion, those are usually the weddings that feel the most memorable as people can really relax, which is when they become most comfortable in our presence as wedding videographers meaning we capture the most natural, candid moments.

Our Favourite Type of Wedding Venues

We're probably not the right people to ask about city hotels, conference-style venues or golf resorts. The places we fall in love with are usually surrounded by nature and history.

Places like:

The common thread between all of them is that they naturally support guest experience and connection, not just a ceremony timeline, and they allow multi-day wedding formats (welcome dinners, pool days, recovery brunches). They're the kind of places where guests can arrive, unpack their bags, pour a glass of wine and settle in ahead of the celebration.

Other Wedding Venues in Barcelona & Catalonia We Recommend

Here are some others that we naturally find ourselves drawn to (and tend to recommend to couples planning multi-day destination weddings).

When Is the Best Time to Get Married in Barcelona & Catalonia?

The most popular months for destination weddings in this part of Spain are May, June, September and early October, and there’s a simple reason for that. You get the warm Mediterranean light, long evenings, and comfortable temperatures for outdoor dinners without the peak summer heat.

July and August are still beautiful, especially for coastal venues, but they can be very hot inland in places like Girona, Penedès and Tarragona, which is something couples often underestimate when planning a multi-day wedding with guests travelling from abroad. That being said, with a well planned timeline the heat is usually manageable! Many couples choose to hold their ceremony later in the afternoon, making the most of the cooler temperatures and beautiful golden evening light, while shaded cocktail hours, pool parties and relaxed daytime activities help guests stay comfortable throughout the celebration.

Spring feels fresh and green, especially in the countryside, while early autumn is probably our personal favourite! The mountains are full of colour, the sunsets can be softer, and the sea is still a perfect temperature for swimming after a hot summer to heat it up.

Airports & Travel Around Barcelona / Catalonia Weddings

One of the reasons destination weddings in this part of Spain work so well is because getting here is actually very simple for international guests. You’re not dealing with remote, hard-to-reach countryside in the way you might in other destination regions — most venues are within a very manageable distance of multiple airports and transport options.

There are three main airports couples and guests usually use depending on the area of the wedding:

Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) is the main international airport and the most common choice, especially for international flights from the US & Canada.. It’s around 20–40 minutes from Barcelona city, and typically 1–1.5 hours to most countryside venues depending on whether you’re heading towards Girona, Penedès or Tarragona.

Girona Airport (GRO) is the most convenient option for Costa Brava weddings. It’s much smaller and easier to navigate, and usually around 20–60 minutes from most Costa Brava venues like Mas Torroella or surrounding countryside estates.

Reus Airport (REU) is the best option for Tarragona and southern Catalonia weddings, specifically for UK based couples and guests. It’s a smaller regional airport, typically around 20–45 minutes from venues in the Tarragona countryside and coastline areas.

All three airports have car rental available, which is what most guests use when attending a destination wedding in this region. Driving is straightforward here, and it gives guests the flexibility to move between accommodation, wedding venues and nearby towns like Girona, Sitges, Penedès or coastal villages without depending on fixed schedules.

For couples who prefer not to drive, there are also plenty of alternatives:

  • Pre-booked private transfers (very common for wedding groups, especially for airport pick-ups and late-night returns)

  • Taxis / local private drivers, which are easy to arrange but usually better booked in advance for rural venues

  • Ride apps like Uber or Cabify, which work mainly in Barcelona city but are less reliable in rural areas

  • Group transport / minibuses, often arranged for welcome dinners or end-of-night returns from the venue

For most of the venues we recommend, whether it’s Masia Cabellut, La Baronia, Xalet del Nin or Castell de Sant Marçal — guests typically either rent a car or rely on a mix of pre-booked transfers and taxis, depending on how the wedding weekend is structured.

Catalan Food, Drinks & Experiences You Can Incorporate Into Your Barcelona Destination Wedding

One of the best things about planning a destination wedding in Catalonia is that if you want to incorperate some traditions or Spanish touches there’s many to choose from. The food, drink and local culture already lend themselves really naturally to multi-day celebrations. Here are ideas couples can weave into their wedding weekend in a simple, authentic way:

Food & Dining Experiences

  • Sharing-style tapas dinners — long tables, lots of small dishes, very relaxed and social

  • Paella for welcome dinners or informal gatherings — especially in villas, fincas and outdoor settings

  • Churros for breakfast or late-night food — simple, fun and always a guest favourite

  • Vermouth & tapas before lunch (vermut hour) — olives, small bites and drinks as a relaxed midday gathering

  • Farm-to-table or seasonal Catalan menus — local ingredients from the region (olive oil, seafood, vegetables, meats)

  • Vineyard dinners — especially in Penedès, where long tables can be set among the vines

Drinks & Local Touches

  • Cava for speeches and cocktail hour — the natural Catalan alternative to champagne

  • Local wines from Penedès and Girona regions — easy way to keep the experience rooted in the place you’re hosting in!

  • Sangria for relaxed moments — ideal for pool parties or informal welcome gatherings

  • Vermouth service during welcome drinks — a very local tradition that works well as a pre-dinner social moment

  • Spanish gin & tonics or late-night cocktails — commonly served during evening celebrations

Guest Experiences & Activities

  • Boat days along the Costa Brava coastline — for smaller groups or pre-wedding activities

  • Exploring nearby villages (Girona, Sitges, Pals, Begur) — relaxed day trips for guests staying longer

  • Cooking classes in Catalan masias or farmhouses — hands-on experiences with local chefs

  • Live acoustic welcome evening, especially guitar — a simple way to set the tone when everyone first arrives, especially in villa courtyards or gardens

  • Outdoor cinema night at the villa or estate — showing personal footage, engagement films or a curated visual story of the couple’s journey

  • Fire performers or light-based performance for late-night celebrations — trust us when we say, Catalonians LOVE a celebration that includes fire!

The Part of Destination Weddings People Don’t Talk About Enough

Before the wedding there’s a lot of focus on things like the ceremony, decor like flowers and the style of dress that’s been carefully selected to portray who you are, those little personal details absolutely enhance the feeling and atmosphere of your wedding, but after years of filming weddings we’ve realised that the moments people end up loving to rewatch the most are usually the spontaneous ones that happen naturally like the laughter around a table the night before, the emotional words from loved ones saying things they’d never usually say in everyday life, and the quieter, more wholesome moments with your other half like sharing private vows before the ceremony or the first morning coffee together the day after the wedding day.
